Description

Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches are Next-generation enterprise access layer switches supporting stand-alone and stacked deployments. It lays the foundation for a complete convergence of wired and wireless on a single platform. The Cisco Catalyst 3650 is built on the advanced Cisco StackWise®-160 and incorporates the new Cisco Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). This switch enables unified wired and wireless policy enforcement, application visibility, flexibility, application optimization, and superior resiliency. The Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches fully support IEEE 802.3at Enhanced Power over Ethernet (PoE+) and offer field-replaceable modular redundant fans and power supplies. With a depth of no more than 12 inches, the Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches can be easily deployed in remote branch offices and offices with narrow wiring closets with limited depth. This family of switches helps you lower your total cost of ownership (TCO) while increasing wireless productivity.

Fixed uplink
All Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches feature a fixed internal uplink port. When purchasing a switch, customers can choose from three uplink port configurations:

● 4 small package hot-swap (SFP) Gigabit Ethernet ports
● 2 SFP+ 10 Gigabit Ethernet or 4 SFP Gigabit Ethernet
● 4 SFP+ 10 Gigabit Ethernet or 4 SFP Gigabit Ethernet
The SFP+ interface supports both 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports and Gigabit Ethernet ports. See Table 1 for a description of the base switch model and corresponding uplink ports. See Table 2 for a description of the various uplink port interface options.

Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches Advantages

Converged wired and wireless access

The Cisco Catalyst 3650 is a standalone stackable access switching platform that provides wired and wireless services on a single platform based on Cisco IOS XE software. With this capability, Cisco is the first to offer a rich set of features that work seamlessly across wired and wireless networks, such as high availability based on stack-on-state switching (SSO), granular QoS, security, and Flexible Netflow (FNF). In addition, wired and wireless capabilities are bundled into a single Cisco IOS software image, reducing the number of software images that users need to verify/prove before they can enable imaging on their network. The single-console port management of the Command Line Interface (CLI) reduces the number of touchpoints used to manage wireless and wireline services, reducing network complexity, simplifying network operations, and reducing the total cost of ownership of the management infrastructure.

The convergence of wired and wireless not only increases the wireless bandwidth in the entire network but also expands the scale of wireless deployment. Each 48-port Cisco Catalyst 3650 delivers 40 Gbps of wireless throughput (20 Gbps for 24-port models). This wireless capacity increases as the number of stacked members increases. This feature can ensure that the network can be extended to support current wireless bandwidth requirements, such as IEEE 802.11n-based access points, and support future wireless standards such as IEEE 802.11ac. In addition, the Cisco Catalyst 3650 can be assigned wireless controller capabilities for better scalability. Each Cisco Catalyst 3650 switch/stack can operate as a wireless controller in two modes:

● Mobile Agent (MA): This is the default mode when the Cisco Catalyst 3650 Switch is delivered. In this mode, the switch is able to terminate the CAPWAP tunnel from the access point and provide a wireless connection to the wireless client. In this mode, security and QoS policies for maintaining the wireless client database, configuring and implementing wireless clients and access points can be performed. In mobile proxy mode, there is no need to use additional licenses on top of IP Base.
● Mobility Controller (MC): In this mode, the Cisco Catalyst 3650 Switch performs all mobile agent tasks and performs mobile coordination, Radio Resource Management (RRM), and Cisco CleanAir® coordination within the mobile subdomain. The Move Controller mode can be enabled on the switch command line interface. An IP Base level license is required when the Cisco Catalyst 3650 switch acts as a mobility controller. In larger deployments, the centrally located Cisco 5508 Wireless LAN Controller (WLC 5508), Cisco Wireless Services Module 2 (WiSM2) (when AireOS version 7.3 is running), and Wireless LAN Controller 5760 also do this.
With a mobile agent located in the wiring closet, each switch provides 40 Gbps of wireless bandwidth (nx 40 Gbps for stacks of n switches) while the mobile controller is used to manage some of the central wireless functions, both of which Combined, a converged, access-based wireless deployment delivers industry-leading wireless scalability and significantly increases wireless throughput.
